Easy Stromboli recipe tips

This easy Stromboli recipe is super simple to put together but here are some tips that can make it even better.

  • Ask the deli attendant to slice the cold cuts thin. It will make the Stromboli easier to jelly roll.
  • Get the pepperoni slices from the deli. The slices are much bigger than the smallest slices you’d normally see on pepperoni pizza.
EASY STROMBOLI RECIPE (8)
  • Make ventilation slits in the dough with a sharp knife. This will allow air to escape and stop the Stromboli from oozing the ingredients inside.
EASY STROMBOLI RECIPE (9)
  • If you’re having a hard time dealing the dough, add some egg wash to the seams before punching them together
  • Besides some shaved Parmesan, feel free to add some shredded cheddar cheese to the top of the bread. It adds a nice layer of flavor and looks great, too.

Where’s the sauce for this easy Stromboli recipe?

I often get asked where the sauce is for this Stromboli recipe.

Some people like to add a layer of sauce down before the provolone cheese and that’s totally fine.

EASY STROMBOLI RECIPE (10)

I just don’t like to do that. I find the bread doesn’t bake as well. I’d prefer to just serve the sauce on the side for dunking.

Here’s a good recipe for tomato sauce if you’d like one but jarred sauce works great here, too.

FAQs

Does a stromboli have sauce in it? ›

You'll sometimes find a little sauce in a stromboli, but it's often left out or served on the size for dipping like a calzone.

Why does my stromboli split? ›

Don't roll too thin.

Otherwise, your homemade stromboli will break apart when you try to seal it.

Is pizza dough the same as calzone dough? ›

Both are prepared with flour, water, salt, and yeast; that's the solution. In contrast, the eggs and olive oil used in most calzone dough give it a deeper flavor and a softer texture. Eggs and oil are not common ingredients in pizza dough, contributing to its crispiness and durability.

What's the difference between a calzone and a stromboli recipe? ›

A calzone features a circle of dough that's folded in half over the filling and sealed by crimping, like a pasty or empanada. A stromboli starts with a rectangular piece of dough that's then topped with add-ins and cheese, rolled up lengthwise and sealed by folding and pressing the extra dough over the edges.

Does a stromboli have ricotta cheese? ›

Calzones use ricotta cheese, and stromboli does not. Stromboli is made with mozzarella cheese (preferably low-moisture) to keep moisture at a minimum.

What is the typical size of stromboli? ›

You will end up with a large stromboli that measures about 12 inches in length and about 4 inches across. After baking, let the stromboli cool down for several minutes. Slice on the bias and it is ready to serve.

How long will stromboli keep in the refrigerator? ›

Especially if this is filled with cheese, this needs to be refrigerated after two hours maximum. Refrigerator: You can keep your stromboli in a container, ziploc baggie, or plastic wrap in the fridge for up to one week.

Do you warm up stromboli? ›

Crisp and golden on the outside and ooey-gooey with melted mozzarella cheese on the inside, it's a great way to enjoy pizza night. While leftover stromboli can be eaten cold (you might like it this way if you love cold pizza), it is tastier when warmed up.

Can you freeze uncooked stromboli? ›

Freezing Shaped Stromboli Before Baking: Instead of freezing the dough as a whole, you can freeze the shaped stromboli before baking.

What is a traditional stromboli? ›

Stromboli is a type of baked turnover filled with various Italian cheeses (typically mozzarella) and usually Italian cold cuts (typically meats such as salami, capocollo and bresaola) or vegetables, served hot. The dough used is either Italian bread dough or pizza dough.

How do you keep stromboli from getting soggy? ›

To prevent stromboli from becoming soggy you need to make sure to cut the slits in the top of the stromboli. This will let the steam escape while it bakes.

Should stromboli be warm or cold? ›

Unlike pizza (which is best piping hot or cold from the fridge), stromboli is really best eaten at room temperature. This recipe is our take on a classic stromboli, which means that it's filled with three kinds of cured meat and just as many cheeses.

What's the difference between a calzone and a stromboli? ›

The major difference between a calzone and a stromboli is how they are folded and sealed before they are baked. Here's the best explanation I can find, courtesy of Bon Appétit: A calzone is a taco, while a stromboli is a burrito. Calzones and tacos are folded into a half moon shape. Stromboli and burritos are rolled.

What is a stromboli sandwich made of? ›

Layer ham and pepperoni on half of the dough (lengthwise). Sprinkle with onion and green pepper. Top with 1/4 cup of pizza sauce. Layer mozzarella, bologna, salami and Swiss cheese over sauce.

What's the difference between a calzone and a stromboli Reddit? ›

To the best of my knowledge, Stromboli is rolled up to create layers on the interior in an almost spiraled fashion, whereas Calzones are large pockets, much like an empanada, without layering on the inside.

What is an original calzone made of? ›

Calzones in Italy were half-moon shaped, not quite like the massive calzones you see in the United States. They had a different recipe as well. The recipe for a calzone from Naples called for a folded pizza with ricotta, mozzarella, anchovies, and olives.
