Genrefilms bieden de mogelijkheid om een concept te koppelen aan een diepere betekenis. Bijvoorbeeld in Wolf staat Jack Nicholsons transformatie naar een weerwolf symbool voor zijn midlifecrisis. Geesten zijn eigenlijk onverwerkte issues. In Bones and All heb je het gevoel dat er meer schuilt achter het kannibalisme van de personages, maar helaas is dat niet het geval.
Maren wordt op haar achttiende gedumpt door haar vader, omdat die geen verantwoordelijkheid meer wil nemen voor haar bloederige daden. In het verleden kwam het sporadisch voor dat Maren kannibalistische trekjes vertoonde. Om zichzelf beter te leren kennen trekt Maren eropuit om enige informatie te krijgen van of over haar moeder die ze nooit gekend heeft. Onderweg leert ze medekannibaal Lee kennen, die haar in ieder geval kan leren omgaan met haar aandoening.
De film is gebaseerd op een gelijknamig boek, waarin thema's zoals feminisme en eenzaamheid zijn verwerkt. Die zitten ook in de film, maar het gegeven van mensen die mensen eten voelt als een losstaande toevoeging. Op zich niks mis mee, maar Bones and All wil overduidelijk voor de diepgang gaan. Die is er niet op dat gebied, waardoor het een beetje pretentieus overkomt.
Het was mogelijk geweest. Het kannibalisme had een allegorie kunnen zijn voor mentale problemen, seksualiteit of verslaving. Regisseur Luca Guadagnino maakte ook Call Me By Your Name en van zo iemand verwacht je dat hij beter zou moeten weten. Hij houdt het echter bij de thema's van het boek, maar ze komen prima uit de verf.
De opening is sterk: we maken kennis met Maren die nog op school zit, alles gaat zijn gangetje, en wanneer je het niet verwacht toont ze per ongeluk haar ware aard. Haar vader moet weer snel inpakken en wegwezen voordat de politie aan de deur staat, en in hun nieuwe verblijf laat hij weten dat dit voor hem de drempel was.
Dit alles heeft flink wat tempo, maar daarna remt het af. Toch blijft de spanning strak, want het gaat nu om nieuwsgierigheid over wat er mis is met Maren en wat ze gaat doen nu ze als nét volwassen meid onverwacht op eigen benen staat. Het letterlijke en figuurlijke reis is begonnen, dit is dus deels een coming-of-ageverhaal.
Het feministische thema komt volledig uit Maren als hoofdpersonage. Ze weet bij wie ze zich prettig voelt en bij wie niet, en komt in woorden en daden voor zichzelf op. De eerste 'eater' die op haar pad komt helpt en informeert haar, maar ze vertrouwt hem niet en neemt al gauw de biezen. Als ze Lee, gespeeld door Timothée Chalamet, ontmoet, weet ze dat ze graag in de buurt van die slaapkamerogen wil blijven en maakt van hem haar blijvende reismaatje.
Het is geen achtbaanrit, maar het blijft intrigerend om deze twee te volgen op hun tocht door de Verenigde Staten, lerend hoe ze hun draai moeten vinden in de maatschappij en met elkaar. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de jaren tachtig toen kannibalen zich wat minder zorgen hoefden te maken over het achterlaten van lijken en hun eigen DNA. Op zich is weinig moeite genomen om dit tijdsbeeld neer te zetten, maar veel meer was ook niet nodig geweest.
Veel kwaliteit is te danken aan de acteerprestaties van beide hoofdpersonen. Taylor Russel speelde al een sterke jongedame in de serie Lost in Space en doet dat hier op een totaal andere manier nog een keer. Chalamet is duidelijk op zijn gemak bij de regisseur met wie hij eerder samenwerkte. Hij toont heel wat meer gezichtsuitdrukkingen dan we van hem gewend zijn. De twee groeien op een ongebruikelijke wijze naar elkaar toe en zuigen je mee in deze ontwikkeling.
Op den duur wordt duidelijk dat de film iets lichter is dan hij zou willen zijn. Het gaat allemaal iets te lang door en de film keert veilig terug op het genrepad met de komst van een antagonist. Dat zal ongetwijfeld het verloop van het boek zijn, maar het is in cinema nooit een regel geweest dat je je daaraan moet houden.
Hoe goed het arthousepubliek de 'gore' zal trekken ligt aan de persoon. De camera richt meestal op voorwerpen in de kamer terwijl je luistert naar het gesmak van de vleeseters, maar soms krijg je ook te zien hoe iemand zijn tanden zet in de huid en er helemaal los op gaat. Het mag duidelijk zijn dat Bones and All een aparte film is. Met een gelauwerde arthouseregisseur aan het hoofd zal hij hoe dan ook weer in de smaak vallen bij de doelgroep.
