Hi,
I know how to use Portrait Orientation Lock so the problem is not that. However, the text message app is stuck on horizontal. Any ideas how I can change it back to Vertical?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you're having issues with the Messages app being horizontal or in landscape mode.
For issues like this, we'd recommend to close the Messages app and restart your iPhone normally:
Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch
Restart your iPhone
With orientation lock disabled in Control Center, launch the Messages app to test it out.
Let us know if that solves this or not, take care.

Text Message Keyboard will not go LandscapeOur family has 4 iPhones. All are on the same account and have the highest IOS version installed. 2 of the phones (7 and 12 ProMax) the keyboard for text messages will turn to landscape when the phone is turned on its side. On the other 2 phones (12 and 13), the text message keyboard will not go to landscape when you turn the phone on its side. We want to be able to have the keyboard go landscape so that the keys are larger and so we can access the handwritten message feature. The Portrait Orientation Lock is NOT on. All other apps function properly when the phone is turned on its side. For example if you are using the calculator and turn the phone sideways, the additional keys show up. If you turn the phone on its side, photos rotate properly. The only function that does not change with rotating the phone is the keyboard for text messages. Is there a setting somewhere to allow the text message keyboard to rotate to landscape when phone is turned sideways?iPhone 13 is running IOS 16.2 and has been shut down and restarted. 53624

Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Center. 2. Tap the Portrait Orientation Lock button to make sure that it's off. Once Orientation Lock is off, return to you message apps to confirm that it's back to the vertical view.
Open the quick menu. You can access the quick menu on most Android smartphones and tablets by swiping down on your phone screen.Touch the auto-rotate/rotate lock icon.
Auto rotate option is turned off or not working. The screen you're using isn't set to auto-rotate. Recent apps are interfering with auto-rotate. You're touching the screen when you rotate.
It is easy to fix a sideways screen. Just right-click on your computer's Desktop, select Display settings, scroll down to Display orientation, and select Landscape from the drop-down menu. Problem solved!
Swipe down from the top of your screen to enable "Auto-Rotate," then turn your phone to the side to switch to landscape mode. Turn your phone upright to switch back to portrait mode.
On the iPhone X and later models, or on iPads running iPadOS 12 and later, swipe down from the top right corner to open Control Center.Tap the lock and arrow icon to turn off the rotation lock. A message at the top of the screen will read Portrait Orientation Lock: Off.
Swipe down on the screen to open the Quick panel.Step 2.If Auto rotate is currently enabled, a blue Auto rotate icon is displayed. Conversely, if the Auto rotate feature is currently disabled, a gray Portrait or Landscape mode icon is displayed.
