What is the best paint for rock painting? ›

What Kinds of Paint Do You Use for Rock Painting? We recommend using acrylic paint for both the base coat and your design. For more intricate, hand-painted designs, we suggest that you use paint pens to draw on top of your base coat.

I determine the price of my rocks based on how much detail work is involved and how many rocks are included in the set. Most of my sales have been between $15 and $20.

Without the primer, most rocks' surfaces work as sandpaper on the nibs of paint pens and brushes' bristles. After a while you'll start noticing the nib lost it's round tip and it has become flat and scratchy.

There are many different brush-on and spray polyurethane sealants available, anywhere from your local hardware store, art store or even supermarkets. The most important aspect about sealing rocks is to wait for your paint to dry for at least 24hs before applying any form of sealant.

I usually wash my rocks, scrub and dry completely (if I buy them from a landscaping store, usually a quick rinse is all they need). Once it's dry you can prime with either a layer of white paint or gesso or a layer of concrete/stone primer if you want to be fancy.

Can you use hairspray to seal painted rocks? ›

Unlike an acrylic spray sealer, hairspray is neither waterproof nor permanent. Generally, I would not recommend painting rocks with washable paint but if you do and you want to seal it, I would use an acrylic spray sealer.

You shouldn't use hairspray to fix drawings. It is likely to yellow over time, often quickly. It may also change the appearance of your work, making it appear darker or even dissolving some colours completely. You should seal your drawings with an artist quality fixative spray instead.

Regular art spray and hairspray are not recommended for sealing your rock paintings, nor is marine spray sealer as we have found both products having problems including to take extended periods of drying time and insufficient coverage.

Sealing your rocks

Life of Colour acrylic paint pens will dry permanently to the rocks surface and don't require sealing for the purposes of keeping inside, at home - but you may want a nice glossy finish regardless! To place your painted rocks outdoors, we recommend using a spray or brush on gloss varnish.

You can use any regular acrylic paint, but I chose to use these outdoor acrylic paints from Hobby Lobby. These paints don't require a sealer on top, but if you use regular acrylic paint, then you must apply a sealer when done. I sealed my rocks even though I didn't need too.

When dry, it forms a really hard durable coat and the acrylic paint will stick to rocks well. However, sealing has the advantage that the color does not rub off so easily, the whole little work of art becomes more weatherproof and lasts longer.

While you can use acrylic paints to create your rock paintings, I've found that it's much easier (and more convenient) to use paint markers and 3D paints, so those are the materials I demonstrate in this video.
