If you are dealing with a Sw Open message on your Raypak heater, I have a solution for you! Over my years of fixing Raypak heaters, the Sw is one of the more common issues I get calls on. A Raypak heater is typically equipped with a pressure switch that only allows the heater to fire up when there is sufficient water flow.

Q: I am trying to turn on my Raypak pool heater for the season and getting a RollOut Sw Open error on the monitor. How can I fix this? – Ron Wells

Problem: Your pool heater might show an error indicating a problem with the rollout switch. This switch is a critical safety feature designed to prevent the heater from overheating or catching fire. It’s a common issue that can cause your pool heater to malfunction.

Solution: (From Tim at Airlucent) The issue was successfully fixed by identifying and replacing a faulty rollout switch in the Raypak natural gas pool heater. I first confirmed the error message on the heater’s display, which indicated a problem with the rollout switch. This switch is a crucial safety component that prevents overheating and potential fire hazards. I tested the switch for continuity using a voltmeter and found it was burnt out, necessitating a replacement. Before installing the new switch, I inspected the exhaust and combustion chamber for any blockages or debris, as these could cause similar issues. After replacing the switch and ensuring there were no other signs of damage or malfunction, the heater resumed normal operation. It’s important to note that while replacing the rollout switch is a straightforward task, it’s essential to prioritize safety and seek professional assistance if unsure about any steps in the process.

It must be noted, however, that the pressure switch is only suitable for determining water pressure in a heater installation where the inlet/outlet water piping is 150 mm below or above the pool level. Otherwise, it doesn’t work and could be the reason for the SW open error.

Step-By-Step Instructions for Fixing the Sw Error Code

If you’re encountering only a Sw Open error with your pool heater, it’s likely due to a restriction in water flow. Here’s a detailed guide to help you troubleshoot and fix this issue:

  1. Inspect Shut-off Valves: Begin by checking the plumbing around your pool heater. Look for any shut-off valves that might be closed. Ensure all water valves are open and positioned correctly to allow normal water flow to the pool.
  2. Check Inlet/Outlet Bypass Valves: Verify if any bypass valves are open. If you find them open, close them. Open bypass valves can restrict water flow to the heater, leading to the SW open Code.
  3. Clear Obstructions in Intake: Investigate the heater’s intake for any obstructions. Removing these blockages should get your heater working again.
  4. Clean Water Filters: Ensure that both the pump basket and the skimmer basket are clean and free from debris, like leaves. Clogged filters are a common cause of restricted water flow. After cleaning, check if the heater functions properly. If it does, regular filter maintenance might be needed. Depending on your model, clean the cartridges or backwash the filter.
  5. Test Pressure Switch: Use a multimeter to test the ends of the pressure switch for continuity. Also, check for any loose wires. If there’s no voltage, the pressure switch might be defective and may need replacement.
  6. Adjust the Pressure Switch: Incorrectly set pressure switches can trigger the SW error. Refer to your heater’s manual for guidance on adjusting the pressure switch.
  7. Secure Loose Wires on Pressure Switch: Check for any loose wires on the pressure switch and securely reattach them.
  8. Check Recirculation Pump: Ensure that the recirculation pump is operational and not set too low. A malfunctioning pump can lead to insufficient water flow.

Note: Even if water intake appears normal in the pool, there could still be a flow restriction significant enough to trigger the SW error. Regular maintenance and checks are key to preventing such issues.

Final Thought

We have seen that the SW open message on your Raypak heater is commonly triggered by issues relating to the pressure switch. That is a problematic pressure switch or an insufficient flow of water into the heater.

That said, there are a few things you can do to keep your pool heater running in great condition. These include:

1. Monitoring chlorine and PH levels of your pool water regularly (depending on what is recommended in the user manual.)

2. Do not run your heater if the water balance is out of the parameters specified by your manufacturer.
