Spicer, Minnesota, lawyer and YouTube personality charged with drug possession (2024)

SPICER — A lawyer from the Spicer area with a large following on social media was arrested last week for alleged possession of cocaine and other drug paraphernalia.

On Thursday, May 23, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office served a warrant at the home of Nicholas Robert Rekieta, 42, and his spouse Kayla Christine Rekieta, 40. Both are from Spicer.

Both Nicholas Rekieta and Kayla Rekieta are facing charges of felony second-degree drug possession and gross misdemeanor charges of child endangerment and unlawful firearm possession.

They made their first appearances Friday in Kandiyohi County District Court and were later released on their own personal recognizance. Conditions of their release include no use or possession of firearms, no use or possession of alcoholic beverages and that both submit to random drug testing and screenings.

Contested omnibus hearings are scheduled Aug. 20 for both. No attorney was listed for either Nicholas or Kayla Rekieta on the Minnesota Judicial Branch’s remote website as of Monday.

Nicholas Rekieta, an attorney based in Spicer and owner of Rekieta Law, has a large online presence with more than 448,000 subscribers to the Rekieta Law channel on YouTube and nearly 160,000 followers on X, formerly known as Twitter. He also has an active account on Rumble, an alternative video platform popular among far-right users and media personalities, such as Andrew Tate.

Nicholas Rekieta’s YouTube Channel posted videos with legal analysis and breakdowns, in his own words “Lawsplaining the Interwebs.” Featured clips on the channel cover the criminal trial of Kyle Rittenhouse and lawsuits between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement executed a search warrant Thursday morning at the Rekieta residence in rural Spicer. As officers approached the home, Nicholas Rekieta was traveling nearby in a motor vehicle and was stopped by law enforcement.

As officers approached the home they knocked on the door and a juvenile female opened the door but wouldn’t let them in. According to the criminal complaint, Nicholas Rekieta refused to provide officers with a door code to enter the home. A door ram was used by law enforcement to gain entry into the home.

Kayla Rekieta, another adult female and four juveniles were also in the home. According to the criminal complaint, officers noted the home was extremely cluttered.

During a search of the home, officers found drug paraphernalia near a nightstand in the master bedroom, a Sig Sauer rifle with several magazines and ammunition underneath the bed. Officers also found items within two safes in the master bedroom, including a digital scale that field-tested positive for cocaine, eight green-colored tablets that tested positive for ketamine, and an unknown brown substance.

According to the complaint, the total amount of measurable cocaine found within the master bedroom was 26.67 grams with packaging.

Nicholas Rekieta stated to police that he and Kayla Rekieta sleep in the master bedroom and that the other adult female was visiting at the home.

Both Nicholas and Kayla Rekieta were arrested and transported to the Kandiyohi County Jail. According to the complaint, a detective noticed several injuries to the arms of Nicholas Rekieta that appeared to be sores consistent with sores common among controlled substance users.

Kayla Rekieta did not speak with officers at the jail. While being booked, she requested her prescription medication be brought to her. While reviewing the prescription bottles for Kayla Rekieta, jail staff found two unknown pills and gummies in one of the bottles. The complaint further notes the pills found did not match the prescription on the bottle.

According to the complaint, Nicholas Rekieta again agreed to speak with detectives but refused to answer any questions regarding the drugs found in the search.
